Graduate school is somehow best painted in browns and brownish yellows. So it was with the University of Chicago. I worked in the building on the left, the Laboratory for Astrophysics and Space Research (not New Amsterdam), a small, semi-independent part of the Enrico Fermi Institute. On the right is the Moore Atomic Energy statue marking the location of the first man/person-made nuclear chain reaction under Stagg Field. Chicago just has it all.
Fortunately, enough of my fellow inmates liked the Super Bowl so life was tolerable. On the left, we have a high energy experimentalist and on the right we have an astrophysics theorist. Now you know how to identify physicists.
We took a little trip down to Maharishi International University along with Colonel BipCuds, we took some beans and we took some rice, and we whipped the British... The first photo is before, the second is after (Left to right, cosmic rays, atomic clusters, fixed-target physics, string theory, cosmology, and Galaxies) and the third is our official proof of visit.
Isn't that a good band photo? Well, it's not a band. I'm on the left (as sometimes happens), Steve is in the middle (visit his family's pizza restaurant in Chicago, it's REALLY good, Delisi's about 4000-something North Western Ave.), and Julie Laffin (the infamous performance artist) on the right. A photo of one of her performances is on the right. What you don't see in that picture is the giraffe that Newt wants us to hunt.
Peko with the Rocky Mountains. There's a good story in here somewhere, but I don't feel like typing it in. On the right are the steps of my Wicker Park/East Ukrainian Village appartment. That's the Classicist Phil and the Documentary Filmmaker Gary Garber (aka The Chicken).
Deal with it, goth is pretty cool.
All things must end, so I got my walking papers (Ph.D.) and departed from the Chicago mortal coil (I'm missing one of the CDs, but I'm through pestering people for it). Top photo is me and my folks. Middle photo is myself, Albion the string theorist, and my fellow (former alas) partner in cosmic rays Little Mike. The bottom photo adds in (without the help of Photoshop) everyone's favorite fish expert Val.
